5 June 2011 Who Wore It Best: Rain Boots Edition

In the past, rain boots used to be considered heavy, ugly, rubber footwear sported by farmers when working in the rice fields or cattle ranches, or mostly for children’s wear. But not anymore! They have recently emerged as the new hot, trendy, “must-have” fashion item among celebrities and fashionistas. Especially, rain boots from Scottish brand “Hunter” and French brand “Aigle” have become the latest fad as numerous celebrities started sporting them in various occasions.

While Hollywood stars tend to wear a lot of “Hunter” boots, it seems that Korean stars prefer “Aigle” boots because they feature a design where the calf part of the boots is tighter and narrower, giving it a less rubber boots’ feel. Korean stars such as Kim Ha Neul, Kim Min Hee, SNSD, Lee Hyori, Orange Caramel have been spotted wearing “Aigle” boots.

Personally I think it’s a very tricky fashion item to pull off because it can easily look comical and like you’re on your way to go work on a farm rather than looking stylish or chic. When styling in an inappropriate way, it can make your calves look shorter and thicker. Maybe that explains why I haven’t come across many women in the streets actually sporting rain boots relative to other hot fashion items which would normally flood the streets. Although, I did notice that there is an increasing number of people wearing them these days.

I’m guessing that the biggest hesitation women have about wearing rain boots is that they might make your legs—calves especially—look shorter. In order to avoid this, it’s crucial that you stay away from loose-fit, baggy clothes. You should try to wear tight clothes such as leggings, skinny jeans which can accentuate your body lines.

It’s nice to style a cute outfit when sporting bright colored rain boots, in order to highlight the color of the boots. Also, if you want make your legs look longer, you should match your rain boots with a mini-skirt or short pants.

On the other hand, when you’re wearing rain boots with vivid patterns, try styling them with matching color skinny pants and black or white tops. If you want to pull off a more flashy and edgy look, try styling rain boots with a matching colored scarf.

Here is a collection of some celebrities sporting different colors and styles of rain boots for you to refer to when choosing yours. Which type of rain boots is your favorite? And who do you think pulled it off the best? ;)

Kim Ha Neul

On the ‘Female Actress’ special episode of KBS’s “1 Night 2 Days” which was aired on the 22nd, actress Kim Ha Neul showed up in a casual yet stylish outfit, sporting hot pants, white t-shirt, check-print shirt, khaki hat, and trendy lime-green rain boots.

Lee Soo Geun made everyone laugh by commenting “You look beautiful even in rain boots. Those are boots that you wear when working in the stables in the countryside, but I guess they can become farm-use or urban-use depending on who wears them.”
