16 July 2011 “Background” idol group members gaining attention

Not all the members of popular idol groups become stars at once. If the extraordinarily beautiful and handsome members capture the attention of the public first, the member with outstanding vocals, the unique personality, or any other special appealing feature finds their color slowly and gains popularity over time.

Here are some examples of some of the “background” members who’ve been recently gaining attention through various means.

-The unique personality appeal

The model case of a ‘fringe’ member gaining late popularity through entertainment TV is B2ST’s Yong Junhyung. B2ST’s Junhyung appeared as a guest on MBC’s “Radio Star” and revealed his hidden comical behavior. The members of B2ST who appeared on the show was split into two groups as mainstream (Kikwang, Doojoon, Yoseob) and fringe (Dongwoon, Hyunseung, Junhyung). Junhyung showed his entertaining side that stood out of the ‘fringe’ group and received much attention. He relived his high school episode of getting beat up by a bunch of big guys through dancing, and his entertainment was praised higher than the ‘mainstream’ group members.

SNSD’s Hyoyeon received powerful applause from the crowd during their “SM Town Live in Paris” concerts and rose as the most internationally loved member of SNSD. The truth was that Hyoyeon didn’t receive much attention compared to fellow members like YoonA and Taeyeon who were active in appearing on TV shows. However, Hyoyeon’s exotic appearance and powerful dances came to be a huge appeal to the European fans. Hyoyeon’s popularity was recognized as she received the most applause during SNSD’s individual greetings at “SM Town Live in Paris”.

Nana was introduced into After School in 2009, but she didn’t receive much attention at the time. Her popularity began after her airport photo that displayed her beautiful figure. On top of that, people analyzed that she solidified her popularity after she appeared on “Radio Star” and showed off her unexpected and awkward yet cute personality. In the show, Nana gave a big, bright smile to MBLAQ’s Mir revealing that she is his computer’s background, and winked at 2PM’s Nichkhun who she revealed as her ideal type.

Lizzy of the same group revealed her easygoing personality, along with the homely Busan accent, on KBS’s “Happy Together”. Her honesty and enthusiastic attitude appealed to the public and she was consecutively featured on SBS’s “Running Man” and MBC’s sitcom “All My Love”. Lizzy originally appeared on “All My Love” as a cameo appearance, but her natural acting received favorable reviews and took ground as a fixed role.

-Talents recognized over time

Super Junior’s Yesung lead his team with his outstanding vocals since the beginning, but it took time for him to begin appearing on various TV shows to receive the public’s attention. Last year, Yesung’s vocal talents were finally recognized as he sang “It Has To Be You”, the OST for KBS’s “Cinderella’s Sister”. Appearing on KBS’s “Star Golden Bell”, “Happy Together”, and MBC’s “Come To Play”, he revealed his drive to show his entertaining capabilities on TV shows, and finally received an undivided attention from the public for his appeal.

Praised to have stable vocals, SECRET’s Song Ji Eun also found the spotlight a spot after her fellow members Han Sunhwa and Hyosung. It was to the point where when her solo single, “Are You Crazy“, gained popularity, she stated, “it’s amazing how the song, which was produced considering losses, gained so much popularity”. Showing a passionate and serious attitude towards music, she has rose as a popular member, following Sunhwa, who had already made her spot through appearing on various TV shows, and Hyosung, who gained much popularity from the male population with her glamorous body.
