9 October 2011 Kahi, Joo Yeon, Uee and Nana in Japan’s “Gina” Magazine + Interview

Their rivals are themselves. What does that mode of thinking create?
The Korean artist boom, heating up more and more in Japan. Among the numerous high-level competitions, these girls battle it out in Japan.

Do they have any discouraging thoughts about their late start?

Kahi: “I’ve never thought of KARA or SNSD as rivals, and I’m not competitive with them. There are a lot of things to learn from even just one of their dance performances, and I think we all have our own individualities/uniqueness. I consider After School itself as After School’s rival!

3 October 2011 Uee Interview, “I Want to Continue Acting Even If I Have to Work My Butt Off”

Interview originally sourced from Digital Times.

The fanbase of idol star Uee of After School has grown diverse in demographics.

As a member of popular idol girl-group After School, Uee already has a large following of young fans. But now as an acting newcomer, Uee is gaining fans from the older generation.

Uee is currently starring in the KBS weekend drama “Ojakkyo Brothers,” whose viewer rating is reaching almost 30%. Her pre-produced drama, “Birdie Buddy” is also showing strong numbers on the cable network tvN.

“It’s really fascinating when grandmother and grandfathers recognize me as they walk past me,” Uee revealed in this interview. In a happy reflection Uee said, “To them, I am a new actress, the girl in that ‘Ojakkyo’ drama.”

Traditionally weekend dramas are geared toward families, so for idol-turned-actor stars, they help widen the fanbase of the stars. “Ojakkyo Brothers” as a warm family drama is helping Uee receive a wide range of love by playing a once-wealthy girl who by a series of unfortunate events end up camping it up on the ‘Ojakkyo’ farm. Viewers are drawn to the story of the young girl, Baek Ja Young, growing up into a mature and responsible young lady.

Uee stated, “Not only is Ja Young growing up, but I am too.” She continued, “I felt a lot of pressure since this was a weekend drama, which draws a lot of viewers. I didn’t know if I could handle such a large role. And I didn’t know how I should interact with people.”
Uee explained that in the past, she really only spoke to the other After School members. She enjoyed being alone and would keep her distance from people.

“But while doing this drama, I am learning how to interact with people and how not to be scared of them.” If Uee had to attend gatherings in the past, she wouldn’t go but now she enjoys them.

“If the other actors and actresses from ‘Ojakkyo’ are having a gathering, I always make sure to go. Even though they must have had prejudices against idol-turned-actors, they approached me first and gave me advice. I almost cried when my seniors warmly encouraged me.”

Uee continued with laughter, “I’m really excited to be give this opportunity to learn how to act and hope that the drama will be extended so I have more time.”

Uee couldn’t hide her passion for acting as she talked about having to balance After School’s Japanese activities with her filming for the drama. On a single day, she can be filming in the morning in Korea and then singing in Japan in the afternoon. Despite the hard schedule Uee exclaimed, “I want to continue acting even if I have to work my butt off.”

“Yes, I am ambitious. I really respect Kim Suh Ah and Gong Hyo Jin and their natural acting. I want to be like them one day. From now on, I want to work more and experience more things.”

17 August 2011 After School Interview @ TV Navi Kansai Version

Interviewer: You guys held your first solo concert in Japan on 7/17/11. How do you feel about it?

Nana: I was so nervous~. I think there were some awkward parts in our performance, but we were able to finish it safely because everyone’s cheers gave us strength!

Kahi: I was really surprised that so many Japanese fans gathered, and it made me happy! I don’t think I’ll ever forget that day.
Interviewer: At the event, you guys performed the Japanese debut song “Bang!” for the first time.

Kahi: This song is a fun one, so I thought to express that, I myself have to enjoy it. We practiced really hard for that, and it was really fun~!

Nana: The audience sang along with us, and I was touched that they knew the lyrics before the release.

Kahi: It’s a song that you can let loose and have fun with. It’s perfect for the summer, so I definitely want everyone to listen to it.

Interviewer: The lyrics describe a woman who is aggressive/a go-getter in love, but how do you two act when in love?

Kahi: I’m not aggressive/a go-getter at all (laughs). I can joke around with male friends, but when in front of a guy who’s my type, I get self-conscious and I don’t act true to my feelings.

Nana: I tend to talk less in front of men. I’m shy and reserved, so it’s impossible to be like these lyrics describe, but I have to fix that (laughs).

Kahi: But on stage, she’s powerful! We all are, of course.

Nana: We’re able to leave a strong impression because of our powerful performances, and we’re a group that’s not afraid of challenges.

Kahi: All 8 of us are unique in our own way, so I think people will want to get to know us better the more they see us!

Interviewer: You guys appeared in Amuro Namie-san’s MV “make it happen” and made headlines. What did you think about the collaboration?

Nana: I was so honored to be able to collaborate with Amuro Namie-san, whom I’ve idolized since I was little! It was a very good experience!

Kahi: I’ve idolized her too since way back when, so I was honored to have received an offer from Amuro-san.

Interviewer: You guys are going to perform at a-nation on August 13th, 21st, and 27th. Please givs us a comment!

Nana: I want to maintain the excitement/suspense while showing a professional performance, one that will be memorable.

Kahi: I think there will be fans of various artists, but we’ll do our best, enough to make everyone’s fans our fans too!
